{life} human trafficking awareness day

on

Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day here in the United States. And it is important for those of us in the US become aware of not only Human Trafficking on the Global Scale, but the extent in which slavery is perpetrated within our own borders. Similarly, we need to understand that we are not only responsible for creating a market in which an industry supports the trafficking across borders, but also within–with our own citizens–our community, our neighbors, our family, our children.

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. As defined under U.S. federal law, victims of human trafficking include children involved in the sex trade, adults age 18 or over who are coerced or deceived into commercial sex acts, and anyone forced into different forms of “labor or services,” such as domestic workers held in a home, or farm-workers forced to labor against their will. The factors that each of these situations have in common are elements of force, fraud, or coercion that are used to control people.  Then, that control is tied to inducing someone into commercial sex acts, or labor or services.

[…]

With 100,000 children estimated to be in the sex trade in the United States each year, it is clear that the total number of human trafficking victims in the U.S. reaches into the hundreds of thousands when estimates of both adults and minors and sex trafficking and labor trafficking are aggregated.

  1. “Fact: There are more individuals in slavery today than at the height of the trans-atlantic slave trade.” That’s straight from the Polaris site. That’s mind-numbing and shiver-inducing. Such a despicable thing, human trafficking, and this is a wonderful cause to be about. Thanks for the awareness you raise, and good luck with the fundraising for the zine to support Door to Grace.

thanks Logan. That Fact is as you say. I like how it carries those images and stories from then into today, and how it creates a present day relevance. Many want to argue the percentages, the comparison of populations then and now…but that doesn’t change the staggering number of humans–period–who are enslaved–today.
