Outside my window: Sean huddled into short sleeves chatting on the phone. the best cell reception and disruptive forum? the front yard or back porch.
I am listening to: before Sean paused his film, explosions. N is in her room with her music up.
I am reading: Textbooks and nothing else now–yet. Sociology or Feminism, anyone? Sean is reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, and N is inhaling my Italo Calvino books.
I am thinking: I am tired of classes already and week one has just finished: not good.
Favorite things of the week: Sean got a job on Thursday; he starts tomorrow: back into Arch and w/ a firm he has respected for a long time. The Spring-like weather.
the presentation board minus a small ledge center bottom where a old pen will lie.
Around the House: Daughter has a “Living Museum” project presentation Thursday. She is and will be presenting Louisa May Alcott (and no, she’s yet to read Little Women). Spent the weekend as a family doing her presentation board. Oh, the benefit of having a family member who has done presentation boards half his life now; he brings lessons on the principles of design lay-out. ||Sean starts tomorrow, an hour commute with a service later in the week (trying to avoid purchase of a second car). Hope it isn’t too cold for bikes tomorrow. || First full week of classes for me.
Things I hope to accomplish…the reading and responses without too much expense of time, and something beside non-fiction.
Music this week: Goat Rodeo Sessions by Stuart Duncan; Chris Thile; Edgar Meyer; & Yo-Yo Ma. Saw them perform/promote the album on The Colbert Report some weeks back. This album has kept me sane this week. One of my favorites is “Less is Moi.” However, here is “Here and Heaven” and “Quarter Chicken Dark.”
Screen Talk: Saw the last installment of Season 2 Sherlock. OH MY! will review the season soon. Let’s just say, all that was brilliant last Season was taken up a notch and elevated by further brilliance. Not much else. I was glad to see Castle, and Bones, and caught up on the first two episodes of Finders–really ready for it to hit a stride, get passed introductions and back story. Nothing film-wise.

–A very moving piece by “Coffee w/ an Architect,” “Important Places“: a gorgeous reflection on the important places the author has been. really, a must read.
Listening to Here and Heaven as I type this – thanks for sharing! I love that picture/poster at the beginning of this post. Wish I could find a copy to hang on my wall.
What is Sean watching?
Thanks also for sharing the article about gender in Battlestar Galactica. I watched the whole series and that was definitely an element that was very cool about it (although one that I kind of only noticed subconsciously).
Yeah, Starbuck worked well as a girl, especially considering the way the show dealt with gender. I did like Dirk Benedict in the role though. (And I just had an OMG moment, realizing that Richard Hatch played Apollo in the 1978 show and Tom Zarek in the new version…! Fun.)
I haven’t started 1Q84 yet. I got it a few weeks back as a free ebook through Goodreads. I’ve heard of Murakami, but never read any of his stuff. Figured I’d try it out some time this year.
I’ve been a Chris Thile fan for nigh a decade, I think. Saw Nickel Creek three times in concert, even. Thile’s work is amazing, from Nickel Creek, his solo albums, Punch Bros, and the rest. He’s funny, knows his stuff, and just a joy to watch. That said, I really miss his Nickel Creek work, and hope the band releases something else one of these days. Nevertheless, the Goat Rodeo stuff looks fun.
Sean is half-way through ’1Q84′ and from his sharing, I am very much interested in reading it, but will have to wait to find the time (and maybe re-read 1984 first).
Colbert was informative because he introduced them all and each member’s accomplishments are impressive, and in the end, it turns out YoYo Ma is somewhat considered a studio musician on the album, as the others each had a hand in the writing of one or more songs. I knew about Thile from Nickel Creek, but none of the others. Maybe he will revisit Nickel Creek sooner than later.
i’m about halfway through 1Q84 and i can say this, and even with confidence: “drop what you are doing find your copy and clear your schedule for the next two to three weeks.”
the book has been a long read and i am frustrated by how long it is taking me to read the thing, but i am in love with it. Murakami had me immediately after reading After Dark. i can’t pretend i completely get him and he completely flusters me with some of the things he chooses to explore or to NOT explain.
his writing though is wonderful.
the book itself is bizarre and unexpected. the story goes along and just about when you think you are understanding its vector a wrench gets thrown in and you have to reorient.
1Q84 is not an easy book and you will have to work for it, but it definitely is rewarding for the work you have to put into it.
That is one of the great things about Murakami. You don’t have to get him entirely to be blown away by his fiction. After Dark was a great place to start. It wasn’t the first Murakami I read, but it was the first novel of his that I read. So good.
Oh my, I love that opening image. Where is it from?
Beautiful work on the Louisa May Alcott board. That ought to impress the teachers!
Was so happy to read about Sean’s job over on his website when he posted about it. In today’s economy that kind of turnaround is a real miracle and I’m thrilled for the whole family.
Very jealous that you’ve got to watch the second season of Sherlock. I’ll have to wait for either the DVD’s or for PBS to show them, whichever comes first. Not sure why the companies find it necessary to wait so long to sell it over here. Ah well, it is good to know that it is worth the wait.
I wish I knew. I can’t make out the signature on the left, nor can I translate (yet) the bottom part. I even used Tineye and couldn’t find a source.
thanks.I wish scrapbooking and card-making had been a craze when I was her age; I would have relied less on stinky marker and lop-sided bubble letters.
“Not sure why the companies find it necessary to wait so long,” especially after how well the earlier season went over so well…

–glad you like. music and poster (found it via Pinterest, couldn’t hunt it down elsewhere, but I would love to have it on a wall too).
–Killer Elite, with Clive Owen, Jason Stratham, and DeNiro (among others). It was set in 1980 (gah! the costumes). anyway, uber-violent.
–I thought it was cool that Starbuck was a girl this time.
Mmm, yummy cast. Haven’t seen that yet.
