I did get around to reading M.M. Kaye’s The Ordinary Princess. It is a quick and charming read. If you enjoy Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess, or if you find Gail Carson Levine’s take on the princess and fairy tales humorous and clever, you will like this romantic (and independently-minded) read.
Kaye has read a lot of fairy tales since childhood and there are plenty of fun references to well-known stories cleverly interwoven. There is self-deprecation and an awareness of the genre into which the author is contributing. I really recommend The Ordinary Princess for fairytale princess readers.

The Ordinary Princess by M.M. Kaye is a wonderful read. I suggest it for mature 6 year-olds and up. It has adventure, some humor, and the slightest touch of romance. If you enjoy princesses or if you don’t, I think The Ordinary Princess is for you. I find it an easy read overall.
The Ordinary Princess is about an ordinary princess who overhears a disastrous plan to force some prince to marry her. Her Serene and Royal Highness Princess Amethyst Alexandra Augusta Araminta Adelaide Aurelia Anne “Amy” runs away. She finds work at a palace (another palace) <HaHa>. Here, she meets the man of her dreams. Whom does she love? How can she marry him if she is a princess? What will happen? You will find all the answers to these questions in The Ordinary Princess.

There is a poem/rhyme which goes like this:

The Ordinary Princess is divided into 4 short sections; which essentially ends up as the 4 chapters of the book. Each section is a line from the poem/rhyme.

The Ordinary Princess sounds fabulous. I love the princess’s very long name, and Anna will love it too, since she loves alliteration (and the letter “A”). We love Gail Carson Levine’s Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg and Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand. Paper Bag Princess is also a favorite. I’ve promised Anna a trip to the library tomorrow (after the last day of school). Hopefully they’ll have The Ordinary Princess. Thanks for the recommendation!
I love Gail Carson Levine Fairies Quest books, too. I really think she captures the spirit of Barrie and Peter Pan in them. Hope you enjoy The Ordinary Princess.
